Looks like that’s what just happened to Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s marriage. By all accounts in the media she’s very sweet. But get this…she didn’t buy me a drink when she had the opportunity. Short and I were staying at the Beverly Hilton for meetings a few years back when Reese and Luke Wilson were filming Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. One of the hotel rooms had a balcony that happened to be overlooking the filming, so while Reese and Luke could often be shielded from the view of some of the looky-loos, we had a birds-eye view. It seemed the only communication we had that week with hotel staff was when they were rudely telling us to keep our voices down during filming or when room service visited 3 times each day. We obliged to an extent to keep our voices down but did insist that Reese buy us a round. She did not.
The lack of respect in Hollywood continued at the Beverly Hills Hotel where our meetings were being held as we were ignored by the valet for quite some time. Apparently Cindy Crawford ranks higher than a couple of 20-somethings playing healthcare executives. The paparazzi ignored us as we walked the red carpet in Asia de Cuba or Cuba de Asia or wherever we had dinner, where Kevin Spacey happened to be throwing some party. We even acted like we didn’t want our picture taken. Amazingly, they saw right through our ploy. And Cafe Deux originally was going to let us in to their super-exclusive one year reopening birthday party, but only if we paid the bouncer $400. So because we couldn’t pay that, we were forced to sneak in, where I was nearly apprehended by some big-mouthed Australian chick playing security guard and was forced to hide out in the bathroom for 20 minutes before emerging to shoot tequila with Natasha Wagner.
But yeah, Reese and Ryan broke up. Guess they couldn’t “Walk the Line” of balancing two acting careers. Or perhaps one of them had “Cruel Intentions” and was cheating. Whatever the case, clearly their marriage wasn’t “Pleasantville.”
