So a day or so ago I wrote about One Tree Hill. I mentioned “Trick” which is the Tree Hill bar that features some big name acts visiting a thriving soda-serving bar in a small town. That got me thinking about The O.C.’s “Bait Shop” and 90210’s “Peach Pit After Dark.”
Each bar features professional musical acts, but each musical act makes sure to play quiet enough so that the venue can still serve as the perfect location for the main characters to have heartfelt, life-changing talks. Obviously, the PPAD is heads and shoulders above Trick and the Bait Shop, but that’s primarily because 90210 was on for 10 years, and so there was more time to feature more guest stars, and more storylines to involve the bar. Here’s a little bit more out about each:

Brooke and Peyton at “Trick.” Brooke has a backstage pass.
Club: Trick
Location: Tree Hill, North Carolina
Description: Owned by Karen Roe and Deb Scott, Trick has served as the location of engagement parties, Halloween parties, and CD releases. Peyton Sawyer books a lot of the acts, while Haley James Scott serves drinks. Karen primarily runs it, but Deb is the majority owner. Prior to Trick’s opening, “Karen’s Café†featured performances by Gavin DeGraw and Sheryl Crow.
Notable Performers: The Wreckers, Bethany Joy Lenz (as Haley James), Tyler Hilton (as asshole Chris Keller), Jimmy Eat World and Fall Out Boy.
Club: The Bait Shop
Location: The Pier, Newport Beach, California
Description: I have no idea who the owner is, but Seth Cohen’s first job was at the Bait Shop, where he swept floors, cleaned bathrooms, and had a crush on Marissa’s first lesbian girlfriend Alex, who managed the joint. The Bait Shop has been the meeting place where the kids have gotten in fights, purchased drugs, and pondered life overlooking the ocean just outside the Bait Shop’s front door.
Notable Performers: Death Cab for Cutie, Finley Quaye, Spoon, Jet, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse and the Black Eyed Peas.
Club: The Peach Pit After Dark
Location: Beverly Hills, California
Description: The Peach Pit After Dark (PPAD) was located in the back of the Peach Pit, owned by Nat. If memory serves, it was Steve who first approached Nat about starting a club in the back. I have no clue how Nat became a not-owner, but various characters owned the PPAD over the course of the show. I know for a fact that Noah Hunter and Valerie each owned the After Dark, and I think that Dylan and David Silver each owned a percentage for a time as well. The PPAD by far had the most notable guests, but again, the After Dark was around a lot longer than either Trick or the Bait Shop.
Notable Performers: Color Me Badd, Barenaked Ladies, Christina Aguilera, The Flaming Lips, Baby Face, Rolling Stones, Dick Dale, The Coors, Powerman 5000 (twice), Goo Goo Dolls, The Tony Rich Project, Luther Vandross, Brian McKnight, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Duncan Sheik, Collective Soul and Edwin McCain. Also, David Silver.
I would’ve loved to have a Trick, Bait Shop or After Dark in high school. All we did was hang out in the Burger King parking lot and drink in orchards.
Brilliant run down.
Keep em coming!
Haha, awesome piece. I don’t watch those other two shows (the Bait Shop sounds like it’s hosted some great acts though) but I remember screaming to anyone who would listen about the PPAD. HELLO??!?!?!? Am I the only one that noticed it was an offshoot of A LAME-ASS FIFTIES DINER???!?!?! You can’t create a hip club vibe with that kind of branding. That would be like having a Chubby’s Late Night in Clovis. And how the hell did Nat have all that extra room? The place looked about three times the size of the Peach Pit! Nobody would listen.
